35 toilets in 20 minutes

12 Oct 2011

Across Australia, shopping centre cleaning is in crisis. Cleaners everywhere are saying: We can’t do our jobs properly because of endless cost-cutting by cleaning contractors and pressure from shopping centre owners to do more in less time.

Toilets bannerSome of us have been given just 20 minutes to keep 35 toilets clean, while others have to walk as much as 14 kilometres in a single shift.

We face enormous stress and pressure. We're getting injured and even suffering breakdowns. And we just can't do jobs our properly.

That's why we have asked cleaning contractors like Spotless and the shopping centre owners, to work with us to solve this crisis. We want more time to clean properly and a living wage, so we can continue doing this important job, keeping our shopping centres clean and hygienic for you.

But Spotless has refused to work with us and shopping centre owners are saying it isn't their problem. Worse still, cleaners across the country are saying their hours are being cut and budgets are being slashed so contractors and shopping centre owners can save money, making this crisis even worse as we are forced to cut even more corners..

Cleaners speak out:

"I now have three times more to do than what I had to do seven years ago, but in the same time! I am doing the work of three people."

"They expect too much of workers and there's just too much work, I had a breakdown under the stress."

"Some days there is so much mess, with vomit and urine and mess, sometimes there is so much I can't clean it all in four hours."

Tell Spotless and shopping centre owners to clean up their act

If you are concerned about this crisis, sign our petition and send a message to Spotless and the owners
