Westfield Group chairman Frank Lowy has committed to meeting cleaners of the group's shopping centres on the same day he stepped down from the top role.
Louise Tarrant, National Secretary of United Voice, which is campaigning for cleaners' rights, told the Westfield annual general meeting that cleaning contracts were often "too lean".
"We think there is an increasing need in this unsustainable business model in facilities management," Ms Tarrant told securityholders at the group's annual general meeting in Sydney on Wednesday.
"The contracts are too lean, the reputable professional cleaning companies that want to work, and our cleaners want to work for in your centres, can no longer afford to do business with Westfield."
Mr Lowy was quizzed by shareholders about the group's attitude to contract cleaners being paid around $600 a week.
"Fair pay for a day's work is very important," Mr Lowy said.
"I know what it feels like to be working in the lower levels.
"I can assure you that due consideration will be given to the questions that you raised and also we will take into consideration the important stakeholders and shareholders," he said.
"I hope that in a discussion we will be able to be acquainted and be reasonably happy with the meeting."
