Spotless cleaners' industrial dispute to hit Christmas shopping

Michelle Ainsworth From: Herald Sun MAJOR shopping centres could be left without cleaners during the busy Christmas period after the latest round of industrial action was announced.
More than 90 per cent of cleaners working for contractor Spotless have voted to take strike action during the festive season. Shopping centres affected by the action include Chadstone, Westfield Doncaster, Westfield Fountain Gate, Werribee Plaza, Broadmeadows Town Centre, Corio Village, Epping Plaza and Victoria Gardens. Cleaners’ union state secretary Jess Walsh said Spotless workers wanted improved workloads and increased wages. “Cleaners in our shopping malls are taking this action because they are under extreme pressure as Spotless cuts back on the time needed to clean properly,” Ms Walsh said. “Spotless boasts that it pays the award minimum to its hard-working cleaners, but the award is meant to be no more than a safety net for workers who are not in a position to bargain with their employers.”
