Shopping cleaners mop until they drop on job

12 Dec 2011

From: The Sunday Telegraph CLEANERS in some shopping centres are walking the equivalent of half a marathon every shift to keep toilets clean and bins emptied.

Cleaners' union United Voice said intense workloads due to cost-cutting by shopping centres and contractors meant cleaners covered the distance from Cairns to Warrnambool every year at work.

Union national secretary Louise Tarrant, who encouraged cleaners to count their steps using a pedometer, said the pressure on cleaners was extreme, with one reporting she was required to scrub 35 toilets in 20 minutes.
