ACT cleaners welcome Chief Minister’s commitment to implement Clean Start reforms before end of 2008
ACT cleaners welcome the ACT Chief Minister’s commitment to implement reforms to give practical effect to the Clean Start Fair Deal for Cleaners principles. The Chief Minister John Stanhope has given a written undertaking to the LHMU, the cleaners’ union, his Government will implement the reforms in standardised government cleaning contracts by the end of this year.
“After two years of Clean Start campaigning to get job security, fair wages and training, cleaners are delighted Jon Stanhope has committed to implementing what will be the greatest reforms of cleaning contracting in the ACT in more than 20 years,” says Lyndal Ryan, ACT Branch Secretary of the LHMU.

“The ACT Government’s promise means that by the end of 2008 standardised government contracts will cover:
- Industry endorsed work rates
- Continuity of employment clauses
- Support for longer shift lengths and fair wages
- Consolidation of school cleaning contracts; and
- Training for school cleaners
“Some of the initiatives will commence as contracts expire and as new contracts are tendered. Further work on the wording of the contract provisions will be undertaken by the Attorney General’s Department with a final completion date of December this year.
“The Chief Minister’s undertaking to cleaners is supported at the ALP which passed the following resolution at its Conference this weekend: Conference welcomes the support of the Stanhope Labor Government of the “Clean Start: A Fair Deal for Cleaners” principles.”
“ACT cleaners, mostly women from non-English speaking background, work hard providing an essential service for our community. They look forward to improvements to their lives and to improved cleanliness of government buildings,” says Lyndal Ryan.
